Mochi - The Moon Rabbit
Ancient folklore tells the tale of a rabbit that lives on the moon, and if you study the markings of the moon before long you will see the shape of this rabbit mixing with a mortar and pestle. Known as the Moon Rabbit, this folklore originated in China and then spread to other Asian cultures. The contents of the mortar differ among Chinese, Japanese, and Korean folklore. In China, he is often portrayed as a companion of the Moon goddess constantly pounding the elixir of life for her, but in Japanese and Korean versions, he is pounding the ingredients for rice cakes. Either way the Moon Rabbit is a symbol of creativity and intelligence.
The moon has been a popular symbol in filmmaking going all the way back to the origins of cinema with Georges Méliès film A Trip to the Moon (1902), so we think the Moon Rabbit perfectly represents our company reminding us to look up at the moon for inspiration, creativity, and to be a part of something bigger. Our company mascot, Mochi, is occasionally seen on the set of Moon Rabbit productions. Everyone loves when he visits even though he doesn’t know how to make rice cakes!
