Georgia Studio Infrastructure Alliance - Interview with Seth F. Johnson

Moon Rabbit Media owner Seth F. Johnson recently gave an interview with the Georgia Studio Infrastructure Alliance where he discussed his carrier in the film and television industry, the work he does as a unit still photographer, commercial director, and operating his production company Moon Rabbit Media.

Creative family roots drive photographer’s success

Seth F. Johnson grew up in a world surrounded by creative minds. You could say it’s in his blood.

By the age of six, Seth was in his family’s studio learning the tricks of marketing and advertising through imagery. But perhaps the most important influence came from his grandfather, a U.S. Navy press photographer who traveled the world capturing spectacular scenes. He even spent time working in the White House basement developing some of those images.

Soaking in his family’s experiences, Seth was inspired to carry on the tradition. For him, success came through Georgia’s film and television production industry,

“It’s kind of crazy to see your images while scrolling through Netflix, Hulu or Prime Video,” says Seth, now a Savannah set photographer and founder of Moon Rabbit Media.

After growing up in Ohio and visiting Georgia often, Seth’s family decided to make the move to Savannah permanently when he was in middle school. Savannah College of Art and Design captured Seth’s attention immediately as a great place to grow his photography skills and maybe get a job doing what he loved.

But that would have to wait. After graduating high school, Seth worked in New York City as a photo assistant in the fashion industry hoping to learn as much as he could while he was there. Yet as fun as NYC can be, Savannah was calling him home.

“When I graduated high school, the entertainment industry was starting up in Savannah,” says Seth. “I knew there was something great brewing.”

Seth returned to Savannah and enrolled in SCAD where he thrived, earning a B.F.A. in Film & Television in 2015 with a focus in writing/directing. These newfound skills would lead him to jobs as a production assistant on locally shot films and music videos.

“On set I would talk about photography all the time,” Seth said, “I would even bring my equipment with me sometimes in hopes they would need someone.”

Sure enough, after a month of hearing him talk about it, Seth finally got the opportunity to take some photos. He would take a couple more jobs as a PA, but he knew where this was heading where it was always going — to a photography career.

It wasn’t easy to get work less than a year out of college, but Seth trusted his gut and stuck with it. Now the hard work is paying off. Since his time at SCAD, Seth has photographed more that 150 celebrities including Daniel Radcliffe, Sylvester Stallone and Shia Lebeouf. He worked on numerous productions, was the lead photographer on “Council of Dads,” filmed in Savannah and joined his local International Cinematographers Guild (ICG) Local 600 in 2016.

In 2015, Seth founded Moon Rabbit Media. His father, Scott Johnson, joined him as a creative director and brought his 30 years of experience in marketing and advertising. Together they’ve built a multimedia film production company that staffs directors, producers, cinematographers, and editors based out of Savannah. Depending on the project his teams can range from five to 75 members, the majority of them being fellow SCAD graduates.

Family has always been important to Seth, and that’s why being able to do what he loves close to home meant so much. Seth’s latest adventure may be his best yet — Over the summer he got engaged to his girlfriend of five years, Minji, who earned her undergraduate degree from SCAD and is currently working towards her Masters at Georgia Tech.

“Transitioning to the workforce and still living in my hometown has been amazing,” Seth said. “Usually, you have to go where the work is, but I’m lucky the work is here at home.”

Each day we were out on location filming we never knew what to expect next from the Bananas their performances were amazing and they were and endless stream of entertainment and interesting things to film. The players, coaches, fans, and owner were all great on and off camera.

Crew - Beau Bellanich - Director of Photography / Steadicam Operator

Here is an amazing still image of Moon Rabbit Media’s Director of Photography Beau Bellanich running A Camera Steadicam for the show he is currently working on.

It is Beau’s belief that a story can be told a thousand different ways, and it is up to filmmakers to make it brilliant, bring it alive, and present it in a way that captivates the audience. He thinks a story should be portrayed so that reality is lost and it is only the audience and the story taking them on an adventure.

At Moon Rabbit Media we really enjoy a challenge.

Moon Rabbit Media just wrapped on a fantastic beauty shoot here in Savannah, GA.

Shooting beauty comes with its own set of challenges, which made this a very interesting and technical shoot. Not only did we have to make sure our model looked great and had perfectly lit skin, we also had to make sure the footage we produced was 100 percent color accurate and would match up perfectly with the corresponding shades and products.

At Moon Rabbit Media we really enjoy a challenge, so this was a very exciting day for us!

Here are some stills of our crew members: Director Seth F. Johnson, Producer Scott Johnson, Gaffer Kody Cunningham, and Script Supervisor Colleen E. Jones.

Crew - Andrew Jones - Sound Mixer / Boom Operator

Moon Rabbit Media would like to congratulate our Sound Mixer Andrew Jones who returned home this fall to work on the set of Servant Season 2 an Apple + TV series created by M. Night Shyamalan and shot in Philadelphia, PA. Andrew who is originally from Philly was an ideal candidate for this show and had to quarantine for two and a half months while working on the series. We are very glad that he made it through without a hitch and are sure he is enjoying some well deserved R&R before our next big shoot.

It is also worth noting that we have told Andrew for years that he looks just like Rupert Grint and on this show, they finally got to work together!

Sun up to sun down, Moon Rabbit Media will get the job done.

When you hire Moon Rabbit Media you have us for the whole day. We always tell our clients they have us for twelve hours or until the job is done.

On our recent shoot for Cooper Productions & Management, we filmed on their Beaulieu property for a location showreel and were able to really maximize the day filming interviews, drone footage, and b-roll. Sun up to sun down, Moon Rabbit Media will get the job done.

Beaulieu is an upcoming venue/location that will be available to rent for events, weddings, and the film & television industry. We really enjoyed filming the main house, marsh, and live oak trees on the property—it really is a magical place.

Here are some stills of our crew members: Director Seth F. Johnson, Producer Scott Johnson, Sound Mixer Henry Godwin, and Script Supervisor Colleen E. Jones.

Moon Rabbit Media - Film Slates

Moon Rabbit Media just ordered two brand new A Camera and B Camera Film Slates. These slates look fantastic and have the U.S. flag and of course the Georgia state flag since we are a proud Georgia company. The colors on these slates look incredible and we can not wait to start breaking them in on our next production. At the end of every shoot, we always ask our clients if they would like to take a photo holding the Moon Rabbit Media slate.

May (2020) Issue of ICG Mag Featuring - Seth F. Johnson's Images

Two images by Moon Rabbit Media’s Seth F. Johnson made it onto the pages of the International Cinematographers Guild (ICG) Magazines May (2020) issue. The first image is of Second AC (Assistant Camera) Jennifer Braddock on the set of NBC’s Council of Dads Season 1 (pg.82). The second image features Moon Rabbit Media’s Director of Photography Beau Bellanich with the rest of the camera team from the Council of Dads (pg.98).

It is always great to see when one of our images or one of our team’s images appears in a magazine.

Moon Rabbit Media - On Camera Interviews

One of our favorite things to film at Moon Rabbit Media is a classic two-camera interview.

Before every interview, we always remind our clients that we at Moon Rabbit Media are on their side.

We understand that many people are not accustomed to appearing on camera and we want all our interviewees to feel as comfortable and natural as possible.

Trust us when we say that we will edit everything together in a way that successfully gets your message across and makes you and your company look amazing.

We keep things fun and engaging and our interviewer always has a list of fantastic questions to ask our subjects.

The images below are from a two-camera interview setup using dual Sony a7RIII cameras with Sony GM 24-70mm and 70-200mm lenses. Our sound mixer had the interviewees miked with a lav mic as well as an overhead boom.
